Reflection on the WORD

Jesus’ Truth: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed to the Jews that those who commit sins are “slaves”, but those who believe in Him as the Saviour, would be liberated from their sins, and can gain Eternal Life.  Ponder on: Do we reject the most precious divine Gift of Eternal Life?  Live our faith: receive the Sacraments with greater fidelity.

John 8:31-36

To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: ‘If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples; you will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’

They answered, ‘We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone; what do you mean, “You will be set free?” ’

Jesus replied: ‘In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave. Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever. So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus offers us and all mankind true freedom if we choose to walk in God’s way of truth and love.
  • Jesus’ death and resurrection have set us free from the power of sin. He came to do His Father’s Will by willingly dying on the cross for our sake to give us everlasting life.
  • Do you know that the saints and martyrs are the happiest people because they offered up their lives to God in obedience to His Will? Have you experienced the joy of doing God’s will in obedience and love for Him?
