Reflection on the WORD

Jesus’ Sadness – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus was deeply saddened by the Pharisees’ blindness and obstinacy in the Good News that He proclaimed.  Ponder on: Do we also continue to “test” God’s Patience with our superficial faith, that does not allow Him to ‘free’ us from our narrow, rigid and self-centred views of our faith?

Mark 8:11-13

The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with Jesus; they demanded of him a sign from heaven, to put him to the test.

And with a profound sigh he said, ‘Why does this generation demand a sign? In truth I tell you, no sign shall be given to this generation.’ And, leaving them again, he re-embarked and went away to the other side.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • ·       Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, we too often ask of God signs to re-assure our faith in Him. As though it is not enough to trust in a loving heavenly Father, we look for more assurances and at times, guarantees.
  • ·       Jesus is the eternal Sign from God; we do not need other signs or guarantees. Through Jesus, we will never be lost and lonely.
  • ·       Yet, how often have we failed to look to Jesus for our needs and direction in life?  Pray for a deeper faith in the Lord.
