Reflection on the WORD

Mission – Faith: In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist declared very clearly, “I am not the Christ! . . . but a voice to prepare the way for the Lord!”  Ponder on: When we serve God and the Church or do good deeds, do we get upset, when other people have the limelight instead of us?  If so, are we serving God’s Glory or our self-glory?

John 1:19-20,23-27

This was how John appeared as a witness. When the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He declared, he did not deny but declared, ‘I am not the Christ.’

So John said, ‘I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord. Make his paths straight!’ Now those who had been sent were Pharisees, and they put this question to him, ‘Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • ·       John steadfastly prepared the people of his time to recognize and receive Jesus as their Messiah when He came. He proclaimed Jesus as the true Saviour who would save mankind from their sins.
  • ·       To be a true and faithful witness for Christ, we must live a Christ-centred life for the love and greater glory of God.
  • ·       Do you draw people to Christ by your words and examples?  How is Jesus challenging you to live your life for Him?
