Reflection on the WORD

Genealogy of Jesus: In today’s Gospel, the three fourteen generations of the genealogy of Israel reveals that humanity was “born for greatness; lost his greatness and regained his greatness through Jesus, the Messiah of the line of David.  Ponder on: Thank God for the divine gift of believing and living within the generation of the redeemed mankind.

Matthew 1:1-2a, 6b, 11b, 16-17

Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:

Abraham fathered Isaac ....

David fathered Solomon ....

Then the deportation to Babylon took place.

Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • ·       Genealogies are very important because they give us our roots and help us to understand our heritage. Some people are able to trace their roots back to many generations, but for immigrants this may be harder.
  • ·       The Genealogy of Jesus gives all Christians a spiritual heritage - so that irrespective of whether we know our earthly heritage, we are connected to a higher spiritual heritage through our Divine Saviour Jesus Christ.
  • ·       Ponder on this great gift from our Heavenly Father which is freely given to the entire human race. All He asks from us is to believe in His Son Jesus Christ, to follow His teachings and to imitate Him in our daily living.
