Reflection on the WORD

Prayers - Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus makes a very radical promise that all prayers will be answered by God.  Ponder on: Do you find Jesus’ promise to be true in your life and in your prayers?  If not, then ponder on: Are your prayers made with the deep sincerity of Glorifying God and serving His people, or are they prayed for your self-centred needs?

Luke 11:9-13

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him.’

‘What father among you would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread?  Or hand him a snake instead of a fish? Or hand him a scorpion if he asked for an egg? If you then, who are evil, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •As our Heavenly Father knows everything, he knows us better than we know ourselves; it is right that we allow Him to decide what He thinks is “best” for us.
  • •Thus, our trust in God giving us the “best” means that none of our prayers are wasted.  All of them are answered, but in God’s ways and in God’s time. This is what Jesus meant when he said, “Ask”, “knock”, “search” and God will always answer your prayers.
  • •Pray for the grace to deepen your relationship with the Lord rather than relate to God through our “wants and needs”.  The latter is self-centred and manipulative and thus personal.
