Reflection on the WORD

Annunciation of the Lord: In today’s Gospel, when the angel Gabriel announced the Good News of Salvation to Mary, she accepted it.  As such, God’s Plan of becoming Man to Save us was able to take place. Ponder on and deepen this Divine Truth of God’s Perfect Plan.  Thank God for His unconditional and Merciful Love for us.

Luke 1:26-31, 34-35, 38

The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God's favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus.’

Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you,’ the angel answered, ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God.’

‘I am the handmaid of the Lord,’ said Mary, ‘let what you have said be done to me.’ And the angel left her.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Mary is truly very attentive and totally obedient to the Word. She responds promptly and with faith and trust in God’s Providence for her. She is indeed a model of faith for all believers.
  • •Mary believed God's Word that she will conceive through the Holy Spirit; which is beyond human comprehension. Yet, she willingly obeyed even if it meant that she may be stoned to death.
  • When God calls us to do His Will, He will also give us all the graces and strength to respond and be faithful to Him. Be open to the Holy Spirit. When God gives you a difficult task, what would be your response?
