Reflection on the WORD

Jesus our Saviour: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims to the Pharisees, that all acts of “fasting” and all good deeds, must be done in the love of the Messiah, who is the Fullness of all Truths.  Ponder on, “In our daily living and prayer, are our intentions focused on unitingwith Jesus in His Love for His Father’s Will?”

Matthew 9:14-15

John's disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’

Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom's attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •In today’s Gospel Jesus tells John’s disciples and us that we should rejoice and not mourn as long as God is present in our hearts. We need to express sorrow and contrition only when we transgress and wander away from God.
  • •Just as there is a time for fasting and feasting, there is also a time for old and new traditions to co-exist. Jesus will give us the wisdom to make the best use of both traditions to grow in His love and ways.
  • •If Jesus was here with us today would we not gladly give up everything just to be with Him and tell Him how much we wish to share in the glory of His presence forever?
