Reflection on the WORD

Genealogy – God’s Providence:  In today’s Gospel, the Genealogy of Jesus embraces the “Messiah’s Path” in the history of humankind.  God continues to be passionately involved in our world and in our lives today.  Do we have the “eyes of faith” to see God’s triumph, in spite of the great suffering and sin in the world?

Matthew 1:1-2a, 6b, 11b, 16-17

Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:

Abraham was the father of Isaac ....

David was the father of Solomon ....

Then the deportation to Babylon took place.

Jacob was the father Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •It took 42 generations before the promised Messiah was born.
  • •Jesus’ ancestors were a motley crowd, many of whom were God-fearing individuals, but some were infamous. Yet, despite human failings, God did not allow that to destroy His plan for redemption.
  • •Likewise, God has a unique plan for you and for me. Have you discovered how God’s love for you is also God’s way of wanting to use you to build His Kingdom here on earth?  Have you discovered how God is trying to communicate to you daily?
