Reflection on the WORD

Jesus of Nazareth: In today’s Gospel, Jesus went to the synagogue in his hometown and proclaimed the Word of God, “This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.”  Ponder on, “Am I attentive to and discerningof the Holy Spirit who stirs and inspires us to recognise God’s Presence and desire to live His Will?”

Luke 4:16-22a

Jesus came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read, and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written:

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to  the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.

He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him.  Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’ And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his lips.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Throughout His life Jesus never lost sight of His mission of spreading the Good News of salvation.
  • •As fully human, Jesus also has freedom of choice. His openness and deep love for God His Father allowed God's blessings and graces to work within Him. He chose to be faithful to His Father and to us at all times.
  • •If we really desire to preach and witness to the Good News of salvation, Our Lord will ensure that we will be able to live it faithfully. The Lord tells us, yes “My yolk is easy and My burden light.”  We must dare to trust Him.
