Reflection on the WORD

Miracles – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ miracle of feeding five thousand men, challenges us to trust in God’s Compassionate Love fully in all our needs.  In the parable the little boy shared his fish and loaves, likewise we are also called to be generous in sharing our possessions; so that God can bless others abundantly through us.

John 6:5-11

Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?’ He only said this to rest Philip; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do. Philip answered, ‘Two hundred denarii would only buy enough to give them a small piece each.’

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said, ‘There is a small boy here with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down.

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all who were sitting ready; he then did the same with the fish, giving out as much as they wanted.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Sometimes, when we encounter problems in life, God puts us to the test. He does so, that we can learn to grow in faith from the experiences.
  • •In this particular situation, the problem seemed insurmountable to Philip. However, as long as we give what little we have, like what the small boy did, God will take care of the rest.
  • •God will always be there for us and He will give us infinitely more than enough graces and Love that we need.  Are you willing to “give” more to God and what are these challenges?
