Reflection on the WORD

Mary and Jesus: In today’s Gospel, Mary who knew and loved Her Son intimately, was able to influence Him to perform His first miracle of turning water into wine, for the wedding feast.  The wisdom of our faith would urge us to seek Mary to intercede for us, as she never fails to draw us closer to Her Son.

John 2:1-5, 7-9a, 11

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. When they ran out of wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus said, ‘Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet.’

His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water,' and they filled them to the brim.  ‘Draw some out now,’ he told them, ‘and take it to the steward.’ They did this; the steward tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. The steward called the bridegroom and said. ‘People generally serve the best wine first and keep the cheaper sort till the guests have plenty to drink, but you have kept the best wine till now.’

This was the first of the signs given by Jesus: it was given at Cana in Galilee. He let his glory be seen, and his disciples believed in him.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus changed water into the best wine and filled the jars to their brim. Jesus takes ordinary things and transforms them into a divine beauty that we cannot find on earth.
  • •Likewise, Jesus can transform all aspects of our lives if we “Do whatever He tells us.”  He can heal our hurts, resolve our debts and give hope to our helplessness.
  • •Bring God into the concrete realities of your daily living and allow Him to transform the “water” of our daily living into the “divine beauty” of His peace, unity, joy and love in our lives.
