Reflection on the WORD

“God’s Mercy”: In today’s Gospel, Jesus explained in the “Parable of the fig tree” that even though it did not produce fruits for three years, the owner agreed to give it another year to bear fruits.  In God’s Mercy and Compassion, God will always give us more time to overcome our failure to live the Gospel.  However, let us not take God for granted.

Luke 13:6-9

Jesus told this parable, ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none. He said to his vinedresser, “For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?”

“Sir,” the man replied, “leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it: it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down.” ’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •When a gardener digs around a tree and manures it, he is giving it special attention and care so that it may bear fruit.
  • •This can be applied to our lives. We need to examine which areas of our lives that are not bearing fruit and need to be challenged so that we will be living more fully in God’s ways.
  • •It will be good to take some time off from work and family to ponder on and pray for insights on how the Lord may be challenging you e.g. certain aspects of your behaviours, attitudes or lifestyles that need to be transformed.
