Reflection on the WORD

Sacrificial Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims to His disciples, “unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest.”  Are we willing to “make sacrifices and die to ourselves” so that we can love God and others more wholeheartedly?

John 12:24-26

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies it yields a rich harvest.

‘Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me, must follow me, and my servant will be with me wherever I am. If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Unless we are willing to die to our needs and to ourselves, it is unlikely that we are receptive to God’s Truth and be open to living a Christ-like life.
  • •If we are unwilling to die to our selfish pride, we can never truly love someone with all our heart and expect to reap the ‘rich harvest’ of love.
  • •We must be willing to sacrifice and be detached from everything for God and out of love for Him. This is never easy, but if we have such desires in our hearts, then perhaps, this is our first step towards truly serving our Lord.
