Reflection on the WORD

Cure of Leper: In today’s Gospel, Jesus cures the leper, out of His Compassion for the leper’s great suffering.  This cure is symbolic of Jesus’ Mission of cleansing the world from the great suffering of our sins, and offering the gift of Eternal Salvation.  Pray for the humility, like the leper, to beg for God’s Mercy for our sins.

Matthew 8:1-4

After Jesus had come down from the mountain large crowds followed him. A man with a virulent skin-disease came up and bowed low in front of him, saying, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can cleanse me.’

Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him saying, ‘I am willing. Be cleansed.’ And his skin-disease was cleansed at once. Then Jesus said to him, ‘Mind you tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering prescribed by Moses, as evidence to them.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •In today’s Gospel, the man with the skin disease had the virtue of humility to accept his illness and sought the healing of Jesus with deep faith.
  • •Like him, we too, with humility and deep faith in Our Lord’s Mercy should ask Him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can cleanse me” of my many sins.
  • •If our prayers are unanswered this could be because we do not pray fervently enough or we are not disposed and open enough to the Truth of Jesus who wants to give us His Father’s blessings.
