Reflection on the WORD

Fidelity to God: In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples that in the pains and trials of the faith, they would flee in fear for their lives.  However, they should be courageous. The world will come to know and accept His Truth and Triumph over sin and death.  Let us pray that we live our faith with greater fidelity in the challenges we face.

John 16:29-33

His disciples said to Jesus, ‘Now you are speaking plainly and not using veiled language. Now we see that you know everything and need not wait for questions to be put into words; because of this we believe that you came from God.’

Jesus answered them: ‘Do you believe at last? Listen; the time will come - indeed it has come already - when you are going to be scattered, each going his own way and leaving me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may find peace in me. In the world you will have hardship, but be courageous: I have conquered the world.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus knows that they will soon abandon Him and deny that they even know Him.
  • How often do we also behave like Jesus’ disciples? In today’s secular world, we are constantly confronted with world views that oppose the Good News and the Church’s Teachings.  Do we sheepishly follow out of fear of being rejected?
  • Our consolation is that Jesus the Risen Christ has already won against all forces that want to destroy the Good News of Salvation.  With faith and courage, together with the Holy Spirit, we can overcome anything and anyone that is against Christ.
