Reflection on the WORD
John the Baptist: In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist the great prophet, proclaims with passion, “I am not the Christ.” We are each called to witness to the faith and Gospel of Christ with credibility and humility like John the Baptist. This is to proclaim Jesus, as Saviour and not for our own glory.
John 1:19-20, 23-27
This was how John appeared as a witness. When the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He declared, he did not deny but declared, ‘I am not the Christ.’
So John said, ‘I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord. Make his paths straight!’ Now those who had been sent were Pharisees, and they put this question to him, ‘Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?’
