Reflection on the WORD

“Kingdom of God”: Jesus in today’s Gospel proclaims that the “Kingdom of God is like a “dot size” mustard seed, that can grow into a huge tree to shelter birds of the air with its great branches.  Likewise, if we are obedient to God’s Will, our faith can become so strong that it can withstand the heavy crosses of our life.

Luke 13:18-21

Jesus said, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with? It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air sheltered in its branches.’

Again he said, ‘What shall I compare the kingdom of God with? It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Faith is God’s gift to us.  This faith may have grown over the years since we were in our mother’s womb when we heard and felt our mother’s prayers.
  • This faith could have come at a later age or a new found gift of God and we are still “young” in our faith and still have much to learn, and still at times find “faith” to be somewhat “strange.”
  • Whatever our faith, God knows what we are going through and longs to help us deepen our relationship with Him.  How are we responding to Jesus’ longings for us?
