Reflection on the WORD

Call of Apostles: In today’s Gospel, Jesus begins calling disciples to become part of His inner most circle – the Apostles.  They are to proclaim the Good News of Salvation and bear witness to Jesus as their Saviour and Lord.  In our daily living, do we witness to Jesus as our Saviour?  Were people drawn closer to Jesus through us?

Jn 1:35-42

John stood there with two of his disciples, Jesus went past, and John looked towards him and said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God.’ And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.

Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, ‘What do you want?’ They answered, ‘Rabbi’ - which means Teacher - ‘where do you live?’ He replied, ‘Come and see’; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ - which means the Christ - and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas’ - which means Rock.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •In today’s Gospel, we see John the Baptist, single-minded in his mission, preparing and pointing people and his followers to Jesus whom he calls “the Lamb of God.”
  • •When Jesus invited the disciples to, “Come and see” for themselves, He was offering them an opportunity to experience first-hand how He lives the Gospel of Good News of Salvation that He proclaims.
  • •How often do we “love” Jesus in the routine way of practising our faith and keeping an impersonal distance from knowing and loving Him more fully? Bring to consciousness the presence of Jesus in your heart several times each day.
