Reflection on the WORD

Self-Righteous: In today’s Gospel, Jesus reprimanded the Pharisees for being self-righteous.  He proclaimed that in the Kingdom of God, those who are humble will be exulted.  Ponder on, “Am I self-righteous? Do I take God’s Goodness for granted?”  God’s Peace and Joy can only inhabit a humble heart.

Lk 14:1.7-11

Now on a Sabbath day Jesus had gone to share a meal in the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely.

He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. He said this, ‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you will have to go and take the lowest place.

‘No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” Then, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be raised up.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus reprimands the Pharisees for their attitude of self-importance and attention seeking.  Jesus also cautions them that other more important guests have not yet arrived.  And when the guests arrive, the Pharisees may feel humiliated if told to take the “lower” seats.
  • Jesus advises that it is wiser to be humble and take the seat of the lowest place, and then be honoured by the host, when asked to take the seat of honour.
  • Attitudes of “self-importance” close our hearts to God’s Spirit because of our “self-preoccupation” and pride; while humility opens our hearts to the Spirit’s promptings to love and serve others selflessly as Jesus has shown us.
