Reflection on the WORD

Union with Jesus: In today’s Gospel, the crowds condemned Jesus for casting out demons through devils.  When we do not love God deeply and live a “sinful” life, our guilt will generate much anger towards others and towards God.  Pray for the wisdom to deepen our love for Jesus daily, and we will find deep peace.

Lk 11:15-20

When Jesus had cast out a devil, some of the people said, ‘It is through Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that he drives devils out.’ Others asked him, as a test, for a sign from heaven; but, knowing what they were thinking, he said to them,

‘Any kingdom which is divided against itself is heading for ruin, and house collapses against house. So, too, with Satan: if he is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? - since you claim that it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out. Now if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own sons drive them out? They shall be your judges, then. But if it is through the finger of God that I drive devils out, then the kingdom of God has indeed caught you unawares.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus overcomes the Evil One through His obedience to the Father’s Will.  His presence and proclamation of His Words of the Gospel with divine power restores the deep freedom of many who are troubled and oppressed by the work of evil spirits.
  • Jesus Himself was tempted and challenged by the evil spirits during His Ministry and Mission to those who longed for eternal Salvation.
  • All the more we should not be surprised if we are also tempted and challenged by the evil spirits of Satan.  However, we should never live in fear, but trust in God’s divine protection and providence that will always be there for us and within us.
