Reflection on the WORD

“Little Children”: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims our need to love children with tenderness and compassion.  They are innocent and vulnerable.  Jesus also reminds us to treat the aged, the physically and mentally challenged and the poor and needy with respect, justice and compassion.

Mt 18:1-5,10-11

The disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ So he called a little child to him whom he set among them.

Then he said, ‘In truth I tell you, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.  And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.

‘Anyone who welcomes one little child like this in my name welcomes me.

‘See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their  angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In this passage Jesus points out that our pride can prevent us from developing our lives to be in deeper union with God.
  • Jesus is telling us to have a childlike humility of openness and trust which are the fundamental virtues on which our Christian life is built.
  • We are each called to be more conscious of God’s constant care, guidance and love for us in all that we do and in the way we relate to people. Our Guardian Angel whispers to us in our conscience; experience this truth more fully.
