21st Week in Ordinary Times : Sunday, 23rd August 2026

Many people think that they have God all figured out. Some even presume to speak for Him. Paul tells us something else – God’s thoughts and God’s ways are so far above and beyond us that we know practically nothing. God’s ways and thinking are incredibly rich and deep, and God will share some of this richness with those who are sufficiently humble and sincere in their attitude. As Socrates is alleged to have said, “I know one thing, that is, I know nothing!” That is the first faltering step towards enlightenment.

For once, Peter was quiet. Jesus had asked the Apostles what people were saying about Him – what was the word on the street? One by one, they repeated what they had heard from others. But then he levelled the question at them: “Whom do you say that I am?” Silence. Then Peter blurted out, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God!”

Jesus was pleased, for these words were not those of the others. They came from deep within Peter and from above. When we still our minds and our voices, and listen with patience and humility, God will teach and inspire us too. We have heard enough of what others say, so let’s give God an opportunity to speak. Let us not be distracted by frivolous things.

PRAYER Lord, I’m still before You and I listen for Your gentle and small voice.
