18th Week in Ordinary Times : Friday, 7th August 2026

Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, was known for its violence, cruelty and pride. In the first reading, the Prophet Nahum prophesies Nineveh’s downfall and announces God’s judgment on Nineveh due to its abuse of power and idolatry. It serves as a warning against those relying on worldly strength, wealth or power leading to a spiritual loss of soul. Nineveh seems to resemble any structure we build in our lives solely on power, selfishness, greed, or oppression. These could be our career, reputation, ministry or relationship in family or community. The downfall of Nineveh reminds us that we cannot have our own way, and fight against God, and win.

Following the grim vision of Nahum, Jesus offers the remedy in the Gospel. He sets the conditions for discipleship: “If anyone wants to be a follower of Mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” Discipleship is an active daily following of Jesus, putting on His mind and heart as well as imitating His sacrifice. Jesus teaches us that by surrendering our desires, sharing our time and gifts with others to make Him loved and known, is the only way to find true eternal life. Denying self and taking up one’s cross means abandoning self-centredness and accepting suffering for the sake of the Gospel. It is the ultimate divine exchange that will win us eternal life in union with God.
