14th Week in Ordinary Times : Tuesday, 7th July 2026

Today, the prophet Hosea brings to light two of Israel’s transgressions. First, the leaders appointed kings and princes without God’s approval that led to political instability and chaos. Second, the people were led astray by building and worshipping false idols, thus rejecting the Lord. Hosea concludes that the consequences of turning away from God due to unfaithfulness, stubbornness of heart and wicked action were famine, destruction and exile. However, God does not abandon the cries of the poor and those who seek His mercy and healing. The psalmist extols the people to trust in the Lord for He is their help and shield.

In the Gospel, we see Jesus as the true shepherd Who is moved with compassion for the crowds who are harassed and helpless due to a lack of proper spiritual guidance. The miracle of the mute man speaking is a sign of God’s liberating power, restoring a voice to the voiceless and bringing glory to God and making visible the Kingdom of God here and now. While the miraculous healing evinces amazement from the crowds, the Pharisees cast doubts and rejection, and attribute Jesus’ power to the prince of devils. Their spiritual blindness prevents them from seeing God’s presence working actively among those who believe.

The readings challenge us: are we focused on self- reliance, or are we moved by genuine compassion for a world in need of a Shepherd, to yield a harvest of grace, freedom and peace?
