Lord, help us to remain faithful to You, trusting that the Spirit speaks through us, even in a worldly age

6th Week in Easter : Monday, 11th May 2026

Acts 16:11-15; Ps 149:1-6, 9; Jn 15:26—16:4 (Ps Wk II)

Jesus speaks tenderly yet honestly to His disciples. He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit but they will be persecuted. From the beginning, Christian witness has never been easy. We see that witness unfold in the city of Philippi where the Jewish population must have been very small.

St Paul goes not to the city centre, but to a quiet place of prayer by the river, located thus probably for necessary ceremonial washings before prayer. There he meets Lydia of Thyatira, a rich businesswoman whose heart the Lord opens. The Gospel enters this Roman colony not with spectacle, but with conversation, hospitality, and a heart made receptive by grace.

We live in a secularistic and materialistic world, where faith is sidelined and Gospel values are misunderstood or dismissed. To speak of truth, fidelity, forgiveness, or the dignity of every human life can invite indifference — or even hostility. Jesus did not hide this reality. Yet He did not leave us alone.

The same Spirit who strengthened the early Church is given to us today. Our witness may not be dramatic. It may look like integrity at work, patience in family life, compassion towards the forgotten, courage in defending the vulnerable, etc.

Like Lydia, hearts are still being opened — often quietly. Our task is not to conquer the world, but to remain faithful, trusting that the Spirit speaks through us, even in a worldly age.

PRAYER:  Lord, may I be a better witness to You and Your love in the world.
