Lord, help me to strive to be living stones, strong and faithful in Christ

33rd Week in Ordinary Time : Thursday 20th November 2025

1 Mac 2:15-29; Ps 49 (50):1-2, 5-6, 14-15; Lk 19:41-44 (Ps Wk I)

The people of Israel once took pride in building their foundation upon strong and faithful leaders such as Mattathias and his sons. These heroes chose to fight for what was right rather than yield to worldly pressures that threatened God’s covenant. Their courage and fidelity established a foundation, a heritage of strength and integrity.

However, in Jesus’ time, that faithfulness had waned. Instead of standing firmly on the foundations laid by their ancestors, the people had grown complacent, even to the point of rejecting the Son of God, they were moving toward their own destruction. What remained was not a living faith but a hollow image of righteousness—built on sand rather than on rock, disconnected from the true spirit of the Law and closed to the peace Christ came to bring. Thus, it’s easy to understand why Jesus shed tears over Jerusalem and the people of Israel.

The question remains for us today: have we grown comfortable with the Christian foundation entrusted to us— content with mediocrity and empty words—or are we striving to be living stones, strong and faithful in Christ?

PRAYER: Jesus, help us to be living stones that are built on Your foundation and with You as our cornerstone.
