Gospel for the Day with Pointers
Tuesday, 21st May,2013
Ord. Wk 7th
Mk 9:33-37
Jesus and his disciples came to Capernaum, and when he got into the house he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’ They said nothing, because on the road they had been arguing which of them was the greatest.
So he sat down, called the Twelve to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all.’ He then took a little child whom he set among them and embraced, and he said to them, ‘Anyone who welcomes a little child such as this in my name, welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me, welcomes not me but the one who sent me.’
TODAY'S POINTERS ON GOD'S WORD
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- In today’s Gospel Jesus tells His apostles and us that to be the greatest in God’s kingdom we have to be humble and thus willingly empty ourselves of pride and self-seeking glory.
- Jesus Himself is our “Perfect” model who is not only fully human, but also fully divine. He came not to be served, but to serve. He emphasized that “if anyone wants to be first he must make himself last of all and servant to all.”
- Can we humble ourselves and serve the Father’s Will as Jesus has shown us? Ask the Lord for the graces to detach ourselves from everything which stands in the way – pride, self-glory, vanity, etc. and transform us to live only in His love and ways.
