Matthew 23:8-12

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and you are all brothers. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.
‘The greatest among you must be your servant. Anyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be raised up.’

TODAY'S POINTERS ON GOD'S WORD
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus warns His disciples against the use of various titles which the Pharisees used to identify themselves as members of the Israelite power elite and who often vied for influence with the royal court and the Roman rulers.

  • Jesus is not against the use of titles, but is against the attitude of self-righteousness, superiority and pride. Jesus wants us to be more conscious of our conduct and attitudes in our dealing with others.

  • Greatness is not found in being served, but in serving others. Examine the way you deal with others. How Christ-like are you towards them?.
