In Malaysia, there are two Jesuits communities: Petaling
Jaya community and Masai, Johor community. Both are apostolate
communities to serve the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur and
the Diocese of Melaka-Johor.
In Petaling Jaya, we run the Parish
Church of St Francis Xavier. Adjoining to the
parish is our Prayer Ministry which publishes the Herald
(the weekly Catholic newspaper of Peninsula Malaysia)
and Shalom (daily reflections on Sacred Scriptures).
We also have a Catholic book shop that sells and publishes
books through The Arrupe Publications.
Jesuits help the Archdiocese
of Kuala Lumpur in varied ways. We serve the Catholic
Research Centre, which publishes the monthly Catholic
Asia News (CAN) magazine. We also
minister to students and drug addicts as well as AIDS
patients through the
National Office of Human Development (NOHD).
There are three Jesuits in our community in Masai,
Johore. One person is involved in pastoral
formation while another reaches out to serve tertiary
students and indegenous people. The third cares for the
Tamil speaking migrant workers and assists in coordinating
Charismatic group meetings.
