Novitiate

 

2 years
Here, the Jesuit novice will learn about himself, Jesus Christ, the Church and the Society of Jesus in the secular world through: 30-days retreat, community living, "experiments", pastoral work, prayer, discernment of Spirits and the like. Here, he will refine and deepen his initial response to God’s call to the vocation.

Philosophy

 

4 years if BA degree; 2-3 years for those with degree before joining
After the Jesuit’s simple perpetual vows, he spends his first year developing his eloquence and skills communication. He then focuses his attention on the study of philosophy - "the science of wisdom".

Regency

 

1-2 years
The Jesuit immerses himself in Jesuit ministries. He is missioned to serve in "real life" apostolic situations. He is given immense opportunities to experience the life of a "fully fledged" Jesuit - a foretaste of the future.



Theology

 

4 years
The Jesuit studies Scripture, Tradition and teachings of the Church, moral theology etc. He is also trained to preach God’s Word and is exposed to different cultures and realities of the world - he grows in wisdom.


Tertianship

 

Around 5 years after ordination
The Jesuit goes through 8 months of final formal formation. Having journeyed so far, the mature Jesuit attempts to integrate more fully his past years of formation and experiences before his solemn final vows.
